Millésime Bio 2010 celebrates successful organic vintage

Millésime Bio, the trade fair for organic wines held in Montpellier (southern France) in January 2010, confirmed its position as the leading event for the sector, welcoming a record number of international visitors and exhibitors. The Millésime Bio Challenge awards, which were presented during the trade show, singled out 173 wines.

Millésime Bio, currently the only trade fair of its kind worldwide, has confirmed its position as the international meeting place for the organic winegrowing sector. Buyers, including retailers, wholesalers and importers, from 26 countries – Argentina, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Poland, the Scandinavian countries and the USA, among others – came to sample wines made by producers from 13 countries.

In 2010, 2,700 professional visitors attended Millésime Bio, against 1,700 in 2009 – an increase of 58%. A record 489 exhibitors took part in the event, against 354 in 2009, representing an increase of 39%. International exhibitors represented 23% of the total, with the majority coming from Italy (10.5%) and Spain (9.5%). There were also exhibitors from North and South America, Egypt and Greece, among other countries. Wine growers from South Africa and Romania exhibited for the second year running.

The ongoing success of Millésime Bio reflects the quality of the event. Participants appreciate the stringent certification procedure for the wines on display, as well as the diverse, representative selection of wines (745,660hl from producers and retailers, against 601,000hl in 2009). Another appealing feature of the show is that all exhibitors have identical booths, where the wine on offer alone makes the difference.

During the trade show, winners of the Millésime Bio Challenge, an international competition for wines made with organic grapes, received their awards. Of the 660 wines entered for the competition, 173 were recognised by the jury.

Ongoing growth in the market for organic wines is being driven by consumer demand for wines that are produced according to environmentally friendly principles, and by a broader interest in the health benefits of organic produce. The forthcoming European Union regulations on organic winemaking (expected to be effective from July 2010) should further boost demand, while supporting the marketing strategy of organic-wine producers.
