Sommet de l’Elevage to go green in 2009
Sommet de l’Elevage, the leading business meeting for European livestock breeders, will be held from 7 to 9 October 2009 in Clermont-Ferrand (in central France). For the first time at the event, there will be a pavilion focusing on renewable energies. The show will welcome 1,150 exhibitors and 75,000 professional visitors – including 2,000 international visitors from 50 countries – to a 150,000m2 exhibition site. More than 350 international exhibitors from 30 countries are expected. In 2009, Sommet de l’Elevage will feature a new pavilion focusing on the growing renewable energy sector. The diversification of energy-production sources is increasingly important, and the farming industry needs to meet such challenges, which ultimately require major investment. The pavilion will include the latest technology in photovoltaic panels, biogas and windmills.
The event is primarily devoted to showing animals and nearly 1,900 animals of high genetic value will be presented at the show, including 22 French and European cattle breeds, 26 sheep breeds and 16 horse breeds.
There will be two new competitions in 2009. For the first time, the French national competition for the Salers beef-cattle breed will be held at the Sommet de l’Elevage trade fair, with the 500 best heads on parade inside the Zénith d’Auvergne concert hall. Also a first, Eurobrune, the European Brown Swiss breed competition, will take place during the trade fair. It will gather about 60 animals from Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland and will end with an auction of elite heifers. The Sommet de l’Elevage trade fair takes place in Clermont-Ferrand, in the heart of the Massif Central region, the largest beef-cattle breeding region in Europe. Beef-cattle breeders from all over the world attend the event to discuss the latest developments in the sector. Among the 2,000 international visitors expected in 2009 will be delegations from Brazil, China, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, Morocco, Senegal, Spain, Russia and Ukraine.
In order to better meet the needs of international visitors, Sommet de l’Elevage has entrusted ADEPTA (Association for the Development of International Exchanges in Agricultural & Agrifood Products & Techniques) with the task of running a reception area entirely dedicated to international delegations. It will help to guide visitors throughout their visit, as well as assisting in the organisation of business meetings with exhibitors.
There will be 15 tours of breeding farms and agro-industry technical sites, including slaughterhouses, insemination centres and a cheese factory, exclusively for international visitors. There will also be presentations on French genetics (cattle and sheep breeds) translated into several languages. Finally, the first Franco-African meetings organised in partnership with AFDI Auvergne will cover the issue of Health Protection for Herds. Every year, the Sommet de l’Elevage trade fair includes political visits, conferences and events. In 2009, there will be a presentation by the French National Institute on Agronomic Research about its work on sustainable development and high-environmental-performance breeding. There will also be symposiums organised by INTERBEV, the professional beef-breeders’ association, and by the French Breeding Institute, with conference topics including Milk production in Europe after 2013 and Organic farming. Finally, the Sommets d’Or competition will reward the best technical innovations presented by farming/breeding sector exhibitors.
