CARTES & IDentification 2009 to focus on Russia
CARTES & IDentification, the leading trade show on digital security and smart technologies, will be held from 17 to 19 November 2009 in Paris-Nord Villepinte. Organisers expect to welcome over 20,000 visitors, as well as 500 exhibitors and 1,500 conference delegates. In 2009, the show’s focus will be on authentication technology and the country in the spotlight will be Russia. Following on from the United States in 2008, Russia will be the country under the spotlight at CARTES & IDentification in 2009. The large number of Russian exhibitors present will demonstrate the sector’s dynamism in the country – the use of plastic cards has become more widespread over recent years and the deployment of equipment at point of sale is accelerating. This rapid development of cards entails an increased risk of card piracy, trafficking and phishing, forcing banks and public-sector organisations to look for new protection solutions. The presence at the trade show of the leading companies specialising in digital security will give them an opportunity to be updated on the achievements and progress already made in this direction. CARTES & IDentification 2009 will also focus on authentication technology. Exhibitors will present their solutions for meeting today’s security needs, particularly in the field of the trusted internet. The theme of the fight against cybercrime will also be addressed. The IDentification trade show, which was successfully launched in 2007, will be held alongside CARTES and will bring together companies offering solutions and technologies relating to biometrics, the securing of documents and transactions, authentication, physical and logical access control, cryptography, RFID, as well as e-government procedures. Another subject that will be explored at the trade show will be the development of contactless payment systems in France. The keen interest generated by near field communication (NFC) over recent years has concentrated on the possibility of transferring credit and debit cards to mobile phones in order to make contactless payments. However, the complexity of setting up standardised and secure NFC systems, as well as the need for the various players (operators, card issuers and associations) to agree on a suitable service model, has delayed the wide-scale launch of contactless payment systems in France. Despite the initial hurdles, contactless payment is now becoming a reality, particularly as a result of the launch of contactless bank cards by the Carrefour chain of hypermarkets in February 2009. In March 2009, a first wave of French hypermarkets enabled consumers to pay for their shopping by simply scanning their bank card. This first move by retailers paves the way for a more widespread roll-out of the technology in the future. In order to promote sustainable development, CARTES & IDentification 2009 will implement measures to minimise the event’s impact on the environment: entry badges will be made from recycled PVC and there will be eco-friendly visitor bags. Promotional documents will be produced by Imprim´vert-certified printers, while the collection and recycling of selected waste, as well as of some materials and promotional items, will be in place. The Congress, which is held alongside the trade show, brings together 1,500 delegates over three days to discuss the latest technical developments, marketing trends and strategic issues, and to hear feedback on concrete case studies. There will be 20 presentations based on themes related to cards as well as identification, which will provide an indispensable addition to visiting the exhibition stands. A survey of delegates carried out by the event’s organisers show that 86% of delegates consider the Congress to be the global benchmark event for the industry. As part of the 2009 Congress, the World Card Summit will bring together key players from the industry to discuss the sector’s opportunities and challenges in the difficult global economic context that is currently prevailing. This opening presentation will host an exceptional panel of top executives, who will share their points of view on the future of their industry. This presentation – the highlight of the Congress – attracted more than 800 people in 2008. The Sesames Awards are an exceptional tool for the promotion of innovative projects, and crown, in a very concrete way, several years of R&D effort. The Awards are decided upon by a jury of experts, and will be given at a prestigious ceremony in Paris, to be held on the day before the opening of CARTES & IDentification 2009. Products presented by the finalists will be on display in the Sesames Area located in the heart of the trade fair. The competition is open to all innovative projects in the relevant sectors and attracts more and more candidates each year. In 2008, 232 applications were submitted for the 10 prizes on offer.
