Kiwicru turns Corsican kiwis into wine at London Wine Fair

Kiwicru, a winegrower from the French island of Corsica, will present its unique range of wines made from kiwi fruit at the London International Wine Fair, which will take place from 12 to 14 May 2009 (booth H96). Christophe Paitier, the young French oenologist behind the company, intends the event to mark the launch of Corsica’s kiwi wine on the British market.

The company’s Kiwicru, Kiwine and sparkling Kiwi’zz wines are made by fermenting Hayward kiwi fruit with Chardonnay grapes, while the company’s rosé Kiwine Merlot is made by blending kiwis with Merlot grapes. The wines are made entirely from locally grown, handpicked fruit and are free of any added sugar or flavouring. The low alcohol content of the wines – ranging from 6% to 8.5% – will particularly appeal to health-conscious wine drinkers. The wines are naturally light, slightly sparkling, aromatic and fresh.

The delicate taste of kiwi fruit gives Kiwicru’s wines a distinctive flavour. The wines should ideally be enjoyed chilled (temperature between 10°C and 12°C), either as an aperitif or with a meal –  they go particularly well with fish. The original mix of fruit in Kiwircu gives it a pale yellow colour with hints of green, an exuberant bouquet of exotic fruit and citrus, and a fresh flavour with an aromatic aftertaste.

Kiwi fruit and grapes possess great nutritional and dietary benefits. The main advantage they offer is the high vitamin C content that is found in kiwi fruit. Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B9 and E, as well as pro-vitamin A, calcium, iron and protein are all also present in Kiwicru’s wine. As a result, the wines are rich in antioxidants as well as polyphenols. When combined, these substances act in synergy, strengthening their effect. As a case in point, antioxidants and polyphenols are considered to neutralise free radicals, helping to fight cellular ageing.

Kiwicru’s wines were mentioned by Andreas Larsson, the leading sommelier, in The Wine Guide. The company was the winner of the French National Innovation Competition in 2008 (organised by the French Research Ministry and the Oséo Agency for innovation). It also won the French National Food Industry Innovation Competition in 2008 (organised by the French Ministry of Agriculture and Agropole).

Kiwicru’s wines are made with produce grown in the Corsican countryside. Corsica is known as the Island of Beauty – an island characterised by its wild, mountainous interior (known as the maquis) and its stunningly beautiful coastline.
